Should I Repair or Replace?
What is the average lifespan of an air conditioning system?
These days, you may find some companies telling you the expected life of your A / C system is on the order of 12 to 15 years, with some companies claiming it is a low as 10. In reality, though, a system that is properly maintained yearly can be in service for more like 15 to 20 years. When confronted with the possibility of needing to replace the entire unit, consider the following in your decision:
- Look at what is wrong with the unit and the cost of a repair. Will the repair be a long term fix or is it a mere"band-aid" leading to more repairs down the road? How efficient is the current unit? How long do you expect to be living in your current house?
- If your unit is 12 to 15 years old, and cost of the repair exceeds 20% of the cost of a new unit (usually $5,000 to $10,000), we recommend replacement.
- If your unit is getting long in the tooth (older than 15 years) and the repair is more than 10% of the cost of a new unit, we recommend seriously looking into replacement.
- The most important recommendation we can give anyone is to ALWAYS get three bids on the job! The cheapest option is usually NOT the best option, but neither is the most expensive. You will find prices all over the board, middle of the road is often the best value.
- Many people tend to think of their A / C as just that “box” outside their house, but this could not be further from the truth! Your cooling system includes not only the box, but also the entire system of ducts, registers and return vents throughout your house. All contribute to the airflow inside your home that keeps you comfortable.
